DAILY MASS READING

HAPPY EASTER

Easter Sunday (Solemnity)

FIRST  READING

Acts 10: 34, 37 – 43

34 And Peter opened his mouth and said: "Truly I perceive that God shows no partiality,

37 the word which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism which John preached:38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.39 And we are witnesses to all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree;40 but God raised him on the third day and made him manifest;41 not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.42 And he commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that he is the one ordained by God to be judge of the living and the dead.43 To him all the prophets bear witness that every one who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name."

PSALM RESPONSES

Psalms 118: 1 - 2, 16 - 17, 22 – 23

1 O give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his steadfast love endures for ever!2 Let Israel say, "His steadfast love endures for ever."

16 the right hand of the LORD is exalted, the right hand of the LORD does valiantly!"17 I shall not die, but I shall live, and recount the deeds of the LORD.

22 The stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner.23 This is the LORD's doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.

SECOND READING

Colossians 3: 1 – 4

1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.3 For you have died, and your life is hid with Christ in God.4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

GOSPEL

John 20: 1 – 9

1 Now on the first day of the week Mary Mag'dalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.2 So she ran, and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him."3 Peter then came out with the other disciple, and they went toward the tomb.4 They both ran, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first;5 and stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; he saw the linen cloths lying,7 and the napkin, which had been on his head, not lying with the linen cloths but rolled up in a place by itself.8 Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed;9 for as yet they did not know the scripture, that he must rise from the dead.

It is important that you choose your career with care, so that you may really follow the vocation that God has destined for you. No day should pass without some prayer to this end. Often repeat with St. Paul: "Lord, what will you have me do?"

Holy Saturday Night: The Easter Vigil

FIRST READING

Genesis 22: 1 - 2, 9 - 13, 15 – 18

1 After these things God tested Abraham, and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here am I."2 He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Mori'ah, and offer him there as a burnt offering upon one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."
9 When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, upon the wood.10 Then Abraham put forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.11 But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven, and said, "Abraham, Abraham!" And he said, "Here am I."12 He said, "Do not lay your hand on the lad or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me."13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns; and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.
15 And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven,16 and said, "By myself I have sworn, says the LORD, because you have done this, and have not withheld your son, your only son,17 I will indeed bless you, and I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore. And your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies,18 and by your descendants shall all the nations of the earth bless themselves, because you have obeyed my voice."

PSALM RESPONSES

Psalms 19: 8 – 11

8 the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes;9 the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever; the ordinances of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether.10 More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward

GOSPEL

Mark 16: 1 – 7

1 And when the sabbath was past, Mary Mag'dalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salo'me, bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him.2 And very early on the first day of the week they went to the tomb when the sun had risen.3 And they were saying to one another, "Who will roll away the stone for us from the door of the tomb?"4 And looking up, they saw that the stone was rolled back; -- it was very large.5 And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe; and they were amazed.6 And he said to them, "Do not be amazed; you seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen, he is not here; see the place where they laid him.7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you."

We confess that one and the same Christ, Lord, and only-begotten Son, is to be acknowledged in two natures without confusion, change, division or separation. The distinction between the natures was never abolished by their union, but rather the character proper to each of the two natures was preserved as they came together in one person (prosopon) and one hypostasis.  - Council of Chalcedon

Good Friday

FIRST READING

Isaiah 52: 13 – 15

13 Behold, my servant shall prosper, he shall be exalted and lifted up, and shall be very high.14 As many were astonished at him -- his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance, and his form beyond that of the sons of men --15 so shall he startle many nations; kings shall shut their mouths because of him; for that which has not been told them they shall see, and that which they have not heard they shall understand

PSALM RESPONSES

Psalms 31: 2, 6, 12 - 13, 15 - 17, 25

2 Incline thy ear to me, rescue me speedily! Be thou a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me!
6 Thou hatest those who pay regard to vain idols; but I trust in the LORD.
12 I have passed out of mind like one who is dead; I have become like a broken vessel.13 Yea, I hear the whispering of many -- terror on every side! -- as they scheme together against me, as they plot to take my life.
15 My times are in thy hand; deliver me from the hand of my enemies and persecutors!16 Let thy face shine on thy servant; save me in thy steadfast love!17 Let me not be put to shame, O LORD, for I call on thee; let the wicked be put to shame, let them go dumbfounded to Sheol.

SECOND READING

Hebrews 4: 14 – 16

14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.15 For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

GOSPEL

John 18: 1 – 40

1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples across the Kidron valley, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered.2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with his disciples.3 So Judas, procuring a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons.4 Then Jesus, knowing all that was to befall him, came forward and said to them, "Whom do you seek?"5 They answered him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said to them, "I am he." Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.6 When he said to them, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground.7 Again he asked them, "Whom do you seek?" And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth."8 Jesus answered, "I told you that I am he; so, if you seek me, let these men go."9 This was to fulfil the word which he had spoken, "Of those whom thou gavest me I lost not one."10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's slave and cut off his right ear. The slave's name was Malchus.11 Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup which the Father has given me?"12 So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews seized Jesus and bound him.13 First they led him to Annas; for he was the father-in-law of Ca'iaphas, who was high priest that year.14 It was Ca'iaphas who had given counsel to the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.15 Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. As this disciple was known to the high priest, he entered the court of the high priest along with Jesus,16 while Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the maid who kept the door, and brought Peter in.17 The maid who kept the door said to Peter, "Are not you also one of this man's disciples?" He said, "I am not."18 Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves; Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.19 The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.20 Jesus answered him, "I have spoken openly to the world; I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together; I have said nothing secretly.21 Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me, what I said to them; they know what I said."22 When he had said this, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, "Is that how you answer the high priest?"23 Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken wrongly, bear witness to the wrong; but if I have spoken rightly, why do you strike me?"24 Annas then sent him bound to Ca'iaphas the high priest.25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said to him, "Are not you also one of his disciples?" He denied it and said, "I am not."

Truly we are passing through disastrous times, when we may well make our own the lamentation of the Prophet: "There is no truth, and there is no mercy, and there is no knowledge of God in the land" (Hosea 4:1). Yet in the midst of this tide of evil, the Virgin Most Merciful rises before our eyes like a rainbow, as the arbiter of peace between God and man.- Pope St. Pius X

DAILY MASS READING

Peter said to him, "Lord, do you wash my feet?"

 Thursday, April 05, 2012
Holy Thursday Evening – Mass of the Lord's Supper

FIRST READING

Exodus 12: 1 - 8, 11 – 14

1 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt,2 "This month shall be for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year for you.3 Tell all the congregation of Israel that on the tenth day of this month they shall take every man a lamb according to their fathers' houses, a lamb for a household;4 and if the household is too small for a lamb, then a man and his neighbor next to his house shall take according to the number of persons; according to what each can eat you shall make your count for the lamb.5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male a year old; you shall take it from the sheep or from the goats;6 and you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month, when the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill their lambs in the evening.7 Then they shall take some of the blood, and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat them.8 They shall eat the flesh that night, roasted; with unleavened bread and bitter herbs they shall eat it.

11 In this manner you shall eat it: your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste. It is the LORD's passover.12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will smite all the first-born in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the LORD.13 The blood shall be a sign for you, upon the houses where you are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall fall upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.14 "This day shall be for you a memorial day, and you shall keep it as a feast to the LORD; throughout your generations you shall observe it as an ordinance for ever.

PSALM RESPONSES

Psalms 116: 12 - 13, 15 – 18

12 What shall I render to the LORD for all his bounty to me?13 I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD,
15 Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.16 O LORD, I am thy servant, the son of thy handmaid. Thou hast loosed my bonds.17 I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving and call on the name of the LORD.18 I will pay my vows to the LORD in the presence of all his people,

SECONG READING

1 Corinthians 11: 23 – 26

23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread,24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, "This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me."25 In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me."26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes

GOSPEL

John 13: 1 – 15

1 Now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.2 And during supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him,3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God,4 rose from supper, laid aside his garments, and girded himself with a towel.5 Then he poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which he was girded.6 He came to Simon Peter; and Peter said to him, "Lord, do you wash my feet?"7 Jesus answered him, "What I am doing you do not know now, but afterward you will understand."8 Peter said to him, "You shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part in me."9 Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!"10 Jesus said to him, "He who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but he is clean all over; and you are clean, but not every one of you."11 For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, "You are not all clean."12 When he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, and resumed his place, he said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you?13 You call me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am.14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.15For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.

As God recognized each of us before we were born, and called us by name, so too may we recognize the value of each human life and pledge ourselves to continue to defend and nurture God's greatest gift to us.-- NCCB 1992 Respect Life Manual
